Rev. Johnmary Ihezue’s journey is a profound testament to faith, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to serving the less fortunate. Born in Nigeria, his early life was marked by humble beginnings and limited access to formal education, having completed only up to Basic 3. Despite these challenges, his life took a transformative turn after a divine encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary. This vision ignited a deep desire to pursue a life dedicated to God and humanity, leading him on an extraordinary path of service.
In response to his calling, Rev. Johnmary joined the Our Lady of Mount Calvary Monastery of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance (Trappists) in Awhum, Diocese of Enugu State, Nigeria. The rigorous spiritual and communal life of the monastery required exceptional discipline and dedication. Though initially unqualified due to his limited education, Rev. Johnmary’s unwavering faith and divine inspiration opened the doors to his monastic journey.
For 19 years, he lived as a solemnly professed monk, fully immersed in prayer, contemplation, and service. His time in the monastery shaped him deeply, strengthening his bond with Christ and nurturing his desire to serve others. However, his journey took a pivotal turn in 2004 when, after much discernment, he was formally released from his monastic vows. This decision was made to allow him to follow a new vocation—one that brought him closer to Christ through direct service to the oppressed, poor, and needy.
Since 2005, Rev. Johnmary has dedicated his life to addressing the plight of society’s most vulnerable. Leaving behind the cloistered life of the monastery, he embarked on a mission to serve those in desperate need of hope, compassion, and support. His commitment to this cause is deeply rooted in his belief that serving the marginalized is a profound way of encountering Christ.
Out of years of fervent prayer and a steadfast desire to uplift the downtrodden, Mary’s Perpetual Help Foundation was established. Inspired by his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her perpetual intercession, the foundation embodies his lifelong mission to care for the poor, particularly children and youth.
The foundation provides holistic support, including shelter, education, healthcare, and spiritual guidance, to orphaned and vulnerable children. It also extends its reach to empower young people through skill-building programs and mentorship, ensuring they have the tools to lead independent and meaningful lives.
Rev. Johnmary’s life is a shining example of what it means to live out one’s faith in service to others. His journey from humble beginnings to monastic dedication, and ultimately to becoming a beacon of hope for the poor, reflects his unwavering commitment to the teachings of Christ.
